Winter Bird Monitoring Program (2024-25)
Outcome of Single Day Mysore Area Winter Bird Monitoring held on 19/01/2025
Collected data from 110 (148) locations spread over Mysore- Mandya – Chamarajanagar districts on a single day.
Observed 224 (226) bird species including 157 residents, 57 migratory, 10 EG/WG (Gundu Patna, Taraka -Dammanakatte & Bandipura-Gopalswamy betta Road) and counted 31,005 (40,435) Birds.
Totally 19 (20) teams consisting of 71 (64) birders took part, among them 4 (6) teams were fully led by Women and 2 (6) partially, totally 19 (21) women took part. Note: Figures within bracket in Sl no. 1, 2, & 3 are 2024 data of recent single day census
Highest, 143 species observed in TWO routes: a) KRS by Harsha NR & Rashmi GR, b) Mysore Rural -1 (Immavu, Hadinaru, Varuna, Varakodu, Giribettada kere) by Dr Gayathri Devi, Dr Pattanshetti N & Kashyap R
Most abundant Species (total count from all the locations) –Bar headed Goose (2881 nos), Barn Swallow (1694), Cattle Egret (1752 nos), Spot bill Duck (803 nos), and Eurasian Coot (732nos)
Most abundant Species (in one location): Bar headed Goose (2500 nos in Nugu backwaters), Northern Pintail (500 nos in KRS), Streaked Weaver (430 in KRS), Cattle Egret (400 in Kukkarahalli), Great Cormorant (350 in Rayana Kere), Little Cormorant (300 in Rayana Kere).
Species occurrence out of 108 lists in %: Brahminy Kite (81%), Indian Pond Heron (84%), Spotted Dove (76%), Red wattled Lapwing (74%) and Barn Swallow (74%).
Most count recorded in (all species in total): Nugu Backwaters (2068 nos), Rayana Kere (1437 nos),Kalluru (1492 nos), Kukkarahalli Kere (1031 nos), and Ranganathittu bird Sanctuary (993 nos) Species richness in numbers: KRS 1 (104), KRS 2 (91), Kalluru (88), Markal (85) and KRS 3 (84).

Partially Blackened CATTLE EGRET was sighted in K Hemmanahalli Kere by team – Sapthagirish, Sukhprit Kaur, Gita Dattatri, Anand, Jagadish, Mr & Mrs Krishnamurthy, Maya, Karthik D, Venkatesh Rao, Shylajesha S & Ravikumar UN.
Waders and Ducks - Citrine Wagtail, Dunlin, Gadwal, Tibetan Sand-plover; Grassland specialists – Chestnut bellied Sandgrouse; Aerial specialists & Raptors – Bank Swallow, European Bee-eater, Peregrine Falcon (Migratory), Steppe Eagle; Bordering Bandipura, Nagarahole Forests – Blue bearded Bee-eater, Bronze Drongo, Gold fronted Leafbird, Oriental Turtle Dove Rufous Woodpecker. NOT FOUND: Knob-billed Duck
