Dr. Salim Ali's Collection

CATALOGUE OF BIRDS IN THE RESERVE COLLECTION OF

REGIONAL MUSEUM OF NATURAL HISTORY, MYSORE

Collected by Dr. Salim Ali (1939-40) during Mysore State Bird Survey

Mysore Bird Survey was conducted by Dr.Salim Ali in the erstwhile Mysore state during the year 1939 -40 for a period of four months on invitation of Mysore Durbar. Expedition was technically supported by American Museum of Natural History, New York. Survey included erstwhile Mysore State spread over Western Ghats and maidans (plains). This was the first scientific survey from erstwhile Mysore state. Most of the birds carry labels of identification, few in Dr.Salim Ali’s own hand writing.

Regional Museum of Natural History, Mysore is a national repository centre for natural wealth of India. It has a good collection of fauna in its reserve collection. One such collection is the study skin specimens of birds collected by the legendary bird man of India Dr. Salim Ali. The Karnataka state museum, located at Bangalore was holding part of Dr. Salim Ali’s Mysore Bird Survey collections. During the establishment of Regional Museum of Natural History in Mysore (Ministry of Environment & Forests, Government of India) took possession of entire lot.

In the year of 2008, Regional Museum of Natural History, Mysore arranged an exhibition of these bird specimens for about a month.

This catalogue contains the list of birds belonging to 12 orders and 26 families. Each bird is clearly mentioned with current valid sequence of order, family, binomial/trinomial nomenclature.
