Nature Walk at Sagarakatte and surroundings

Weather: Clear sky and pleasant atmosphere

Participants: 31 members (S/s Harishchandra and Srinidhi have come all the way from Bengaluru by night train for birding!)

Habitat: Marsh, Pasture, and dry-bed of depleting KRS backwaters

Sightings:

  • Butterflies: just 04 species
  • Birds: 55 species

Highlight:

  • Sighted 16 terrestrial and 39 water bird species
  • Observed opportunistic foraging by WHISKERED TERN Chlidonias hybridus, BROWN-HEADED GULL Larus brunnicephalus & INDIAN RIVER TERN Sterna aurantia, over the place where the CORMORANTS Phalacrocorax spp were busy in community fishing.
  • EURASIAN EAGLE-OWL Bubo bubo mobbed by CROWS was observed near bridge under construction across river Laxman- thirtha.

b) Few individuals of ORIENTAL OR EASTERN SKYLARK Alauda gulgula & SYKE’S LARK Galerida deva

c) LARGE EGRET'S Casmerodius albus extended gape-line behind eye compared with MEDIAN EGRET Mesophoyx intermedia

d) INDIAN SHAG beak pattern compared to LITTLE CORMORANT

e) BLACK-TAILED GODWIT’s beak length and color

f) Characters to differentiate between LITTLE-RINGED Charadrius dubius & KENTISH PLOVER Charadrius alexandrinus

g) Comparison between COMMON GREENSHANK Tringa nebularia & MARSH SANDPIPER Tringa stagnatilis

h) Undulating flights of YELLOW WAGTAIL Motacilla flava

Distance : 24 Km from Mysore Railway Station

Instructions :

1. Program is open to all

2. Please buy a railway ticket to Sagarakatte and take train no. 56266, Mysore –Arsikere passenger and getdown at Sagarakatte station

3. Carry sufficient water and snacks for individual requirement

4. Return train is at 12.56 pm or we can take bus to return to Mysore / OR one can come in their own vehicle upto Sagarakatte via Yelwal also.
